Balavihar and Chinmaya Yuva Kendra

"Children are not vessels to be filled, but lamps to be lit.”

— Swami Chinmayananda

Mission Statement:

“To help children learn values with fun, to delight like the moon and shine like the sun.”

What is it?

BalVihar is a weekly gathering of children at Chinmaya Sadhana Ashram and residence of BalVihar Sewak/Sevika.

Why should anyone participate in it?

  • To help children bloom, grow, and inculcate values through fun-filled activities.
  • BalVihar enhances the overall development of the personality of a child at all levels — physical, emotional, intellectual and spiritual.
  • BalVihar offers a modern day alternative in which loving Sevaks and Sevikas teach children what they ought to know in a fun way with the love of a parent, the doting of a grandparent and the discipline of a teacher.
  • To enable parents to raise children with a reverence for Indian culture
  • To create self-confidence and inspire children to serve and act cheerfully.
  • BalVihar provides children an atmosphere to grow with noble ideals and fulfill their potential.

Who conducts BalVihar classes?

Trained volunteers (sevaks) conduct interactive and fun value education classes drawing from timeless Indian Scripture (Mahabharata, Bhagavatam, Puranas and the Ramayana), Vedic philosophy and other facets of Hindu culture.

What is covered in BalVihar classes?

  • Stories, games, celebration of festivals and creative activities which enable children to connect with Indian culture in an engaging way.
  • Sanskrit prayers, bhajans and chanting that gives them a solid grounding in Hindu culture.

Want to become a BalVihar Sevak/Sevika?

Sevaks/Sevikas (teachers and administrators) learn the art of living in a loving, nurturing environment of discipline, where their personalities spontaneously blossom on physical, emotional, intellectual, and spiritual levels. Through absorbing the stories, games and songs, Sevaks and Sevikas are given the opportunity to grow themselves. Chinmaya Geeta Chanting Competition

Children from Jr.Kg. till 10th Standard participate in this divine event in which everyone blossoms in the aura of Bhagwad Geeta.

Chinmaya Geeta Chanting Compition

What is it?

The Geeta was Swami Chinmayananda’s life breath. He wanted the Lord’s Song to echo among people of all ages and across all continents. He envisioned the chanting competitions as an introduction to a life-long friendship with the Geeta with the progressive strategy to CHANT-STUDY-KNOW-LIVE the Geeta. Children, parents, and grandparents have thus been encouraging each other to participate in this healthy competition, of which the underlying goal is spiritual evolution.

Why should anyone participate in it?

This competition is just to introduce students to this great cultural heritage of our nation, which in due course, as they grow up to become responsible citizens, will inspire them to understand philosophy of Universal Brotherhood through this Song-Divine. We are sure you would certainly like to be a part of this mission of Nation–Building, by extending your best cooperation.
